Chaperone?

It's difficult to say at two years old where the line between Best Friend and Girl Friend is crossed but I think you have to cross it in a ship christened 'The Wishful Thinker'... a ship I appear to be sailing in at the moment; or perhaps it's 'The Appalled Parent', my lenses need cleaning.

The spud rough-houses and squabbles with his friend (I'll call her 'L' for 'Lolita') just as he does with his other friends only just that bit less. He plays with her and asks for her the way he does with his other friends only just that little bit more. He hugs and kisses her... er... well they hold hands and kiss on such a regular basis that it can take 5 minutes of standing in the rain for them just to be finished saying goodbye.

They go to nursery together and they've known each other since they were about 10 months old when her childminder hung around with his. When she moved on he was in such agonies that I had to send a note through the childminders network to her Mum and we had a blind date - or rather, us Mums had a blind date; Charlie and L ran towards each other in slow motion calling each other's names and held hands all afternoon. It was so sweet I had to have a splenectomy afterwards.

He even wakes up calling her name sometimes... I mean, don't you have to be 21 and terribly misunderstood for that?

OK, so I'm totally projecting here and it's probably just that they're best best friends but the spud absolutely treats her differently then all his other mates - even the other girls and even his other best best mates.

I do wonder what sort of things they think about each other, what fledgling feelings bloom in their hormone-free little hearts. It's a good thing that she's absolutely lovely, I just hope it all ends well. In the meantime, we will be making a valentine's card tomorrow and posting it off just to hedge our bets.

Ah young love. At about 5 The Hair had a little girl best friend. One day I found a 'weeding' invitation under his bed. I phoned the other mom to coo. Her daughter's response? Yeah I know, I TOLD him that! They are still in the same class at school but the 'romance' ended long ago.

Oh this is so very sweet! I wonder, like you, how it will end.

Helen - 'weeding' !! I am ashamed to admit that it took me a few moments to work that one out!!

Michelle - I know... probably the same way toddlers manage everything - it'll just get put aside for something new!

My children both have friends whom they have known since birth. They have done everything together and the eldest two are now in the same class at school.

They are same sex friends. The 4 year old shouts out in her sleep about her friend. Every picture she draws is for her friend. The 3 year old will only go to sleep if he is reassured that he will see his little friend the following day.

Laura - Aha! Well that's that then... perhaps no Valentine's card after all! I knew it really... it's just so very very sweet...

I have always suspected that Charlie was advanced for his age - though I don't have to tell you that! Ah, young love.

Cooper has a girlfriend in the little girl who lives nextdoor. It would not be a complete day unless I heard M.'s name at least 347 times. If it's possible, he is more excited to see her on a regular basis than he his to see either me or his father. Her family will be moving in a few years to attend to her Dad's last years in the military, and I am already dreading that day.

Oh, this reminded me of a little three year old boy I once worked with at a summer camp. He was in LOVE with a little blond girl, who unfortunately didn't share his feelings, and he would lay down beside her when she napped, and stroke her hair in such a sweet way that I would cry! Love - what a complicated emotion!

My son has a friend who he went through nursery with. They met at the age of 9 months, were split up into different rooms but the staff had to take them on regular visits to see each other, and they are still friends now.
However Dan is insistant that she is only a friend. A girl, yes, but NOT his girlfriend.
We are at that age when girls are urgh!

Fishsticks - so sweet, hey? Glad the move isn't for a few more years or so...

Sandrine - good post! Two is great, hey?

Jen - that takes sweet to a whole new level.

Tara - ah... I'm sure we'll be there soon, meantime they can enjoy themselves.

Lady MacLeod - indeed! Some people are just meant to be... guess only time will tell!

Good job! You've got his life all planned out.

Note to self: Find girl for my son now so he won't have to suffer through the teenage years, etc.....

Hmmmm...very good idea.
