Dreams and smiles

Dreams – Sue has tagged me to write about my dreams and it’s an interesting tag. For a period of four years when I was in my twenties, I wrote down my dreams every morning and it was a really interesting experiment. Firstly, I only remembered one dream a night, if that. By the end of the four years, I was remembering four or five dreams a night. I wondered at the time if that was because the act of remembering my dreams meant that I was accessing the part of my brain that creates dreams and therefore stimulating it to dream more, or if I was just getting better at remembering. Certainly I realised that if couldn’t remember a dream, I could lie in the position I was in when I woke up and the dreams would come back to me.

Since then, I have lost the habit of remembering my dreams and only remember them infrequently. I used to have a lot of heroic dreams about rescuing people and saving the world but now the Spud features pretty heavily. When he was very little I had some heart-rending dreams about losing him which used to jerk me awake but those seem to have calmed down, thankfully as the last thing I need is less sleep.

Last night in a blend of the two, I dreamed that I and a team of my friends were being lowered on a platform into a pit deep below the city in order to try to avert some catastrophe. As the platform began to lower, I handed the spud over the railings to my brother and asked him to look after the baby because I knew I wasn’t coming back. I think it’s pretty obvious where my subconscious is these days... ie, I feel the need to star in a Bruce Willis movie as Brucie himself. I'm sure if I did some judicious re-distribution of flab I could look a little beef-cakey.

On another note, DJ Kirkby has kindly given me the ‘You Make Me Smile’ award which has made me smile a lot. I don’t know how she finds the time, she has 3 children and is writing two books via blog and she makes a lot of people smile herself.

I’d like to pass this on to three people who make me smile: Elsie, Darth, and Jennie

I once had a dream as a child that I was swimming in the ocean and a shark appeared and started chasing me. My dad jumped into the water, pointed at the shark and gave him "the eyebrows", and the shark swam away frightened. My dad, the hero. I hope my son feels that way about me.

Hi. I used to record my dreams for about a year too. I ended up mapping them out and it turned out I was dreaming about a city, a small town, a seaside resort and a rural area that were all connected...weird stuff!

Congratulations on the award! WEll deserved.

I always have dreams where I am rescuing people. Q says I have a "rescue complex" in waking life so that is why the dreams. I'm not sure of the psychological meaning of a rescue complex, but I figure it could be worse eh?

Hello lovely Sparx. I still stalk, sorry, read you all the time, but today I felt the need to give you an answer. When you were remembering lots of dreams it was because you'd trained your brain to remember them. Everyone dreams and lots of them everynight, it's just that most of us don't remember all if any of them. A few years back, ok actually quite a few if I'm honest - it was when I was still at uni - one of the radio stations over here used to have a dream psychiatrist every Thursday from 11-12. I loved her, she made so much sense. Dreams are very powerful. Dreams are cool!
Getting back in my box now.

I've been reading your blog for 6 months or so now without commenting and I am starting to feel like a kid taking too much candy from the bowl on Halloween. So this is my guilt-induced comment. Maybe someday I'll manage a better sort of comment, you deserve it for writing such entertaining posts. Anyway, back to that promised comment: Thanks for linking to other blogs so frequently (as in this post). I enjoy getting to browse around.

Jennie - well, ya do! And thanks for the link, she's very very funny indeed!

Elsie - I do love your blog, I think you're way funny. Good to see you back too, you were away for quite a while.

Jen - I love it, 'the eyebrows'!!! I have such an image now! You know, I think all parents are heros for a while until we turn into The Enemy! Great to see you again.

DJ - it's so interesting, isn't it? I used to have regular dreams about a house I used to live in and also about big areas of water. I always wondered if they meant anything, I think only we can tell ourselves that, hey?

Lady M - I can imagine you having a rescue complex, I know how much you were happy to have taken in MC Solaar! I hope all is well in your magical land, good to see you.

hello lovely Kathryn - welcome! I wondered if it was something like my mind training itself to remember dreams. It was fascinating. Most interestingly, when I read the books, I remember each dream I wrote down whereas I couldn't tell you anything about my dream from last night except it involved a bath tub... writing them down moves them into long-term memory I think. God knows what else is back there! Thanks for dropping over!

Lindy - guess you're the same, you trained your brain to remember and now, phutt, all gone. Sometimes though we need our brains for Other Things, hey? Good to see you, haven't been by in a while... next post tells story...

Bel - thanks for the link, will come and track you down!

Nina - I like the metaphor but not sure I deserve it! I love it when there are links in other bloggers posts too, although sometimes I find it overwhelming how many great blogs there are out there... thanks for unveiling yourself and for dropping over, great to meet you.
